Solar Power: Clean energy!
Solar systems: applications
Solar energy: Clean, gently, renewable form of energy. Solar cells are used in order for the solar radiation that reaches the ground (on average > 1000 watt per hour) to be converted into electric energy. The commercialised solar cells efficiency today is 5% - 20% depending on their type. This means that 1000 watt of solar energy are changed in 50-200 watt electricity per hour per square meter with solar cells.
The sun is providing us with over 1000 Watt per hour per square metre! The solar energy that reaches ground in ONE hour covers the energy that the planet needs for the whole year!
How can I take advantage of the solar energy and the solar cells?
Solar systems: We can take advantage of the solar energy by using simple, small and flexible solar cells the same size as a mobile phone to charge a small battery or even to install large solar systems that will meet the electricity needs of a house or an entire city!
Small portable solar energy system: is a solar power system, small in size to move easily and to provide electricity where we need it (e.g. camping in areas outside the power network, the garden, the house in case of power failure). Usually, to produce energy, accumulators (batteries) are needed.
Off-grid solar system: It consists of the same parts with the previous system but it is bigger and it is usually installed permanently. It can supply the electricity needs of places like holiday homes, caravans, boats, greenhouses, farms, remote stations (measurements, telecommunications etc.) and even permanent houses, independent from the main power supply. Batteries needed here as well.
Grid-tied system: It is a system that produces electricity with solar cells but it connects to the main power supplier. In this case, the producer can consume (if they wish) part of the electricity and they can sell the rest to the main power supplier in a very competitive (and very attractive) price, having profit. This grid-tied system does not require batteries.
